Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

The Neo Gothic structure of Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica is located on rue Notre-Dame ouest (West Notre-Dame Street) and dominates the square. Work began on this building in the early 1820’s. By the time the structure was completed, Montreal could boast of having the largest church in North America. Victor Bourgeau was commissioned to do the interiors of the Basilica and he worked on it from 1872 to 1879. Incidentally, he also worked on Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral in Montreal.
